Have you heard about the timebank?

DACU began its timebank, Mesilla Valley Timebank, in early 2016 in an effort to help residents of Doña Ana County connect and share their skills with one another. In just over two years, the timebank has grown to over 200 members and over 1,000 hours exchanged.

What is a timebank?

A timebank is a community made up of individuals and organizations who have agreed to exchange services with one another free of charge. Instead of compensating one another in dollars, pesos, or other monetary currency, timebank members exchange time credits. One hour of work equals one time credit. Members can spend their credits by receiving services from other members.

A wide variety of services are offered in the timebank, including transportation, house cleaning and repairs, writing and editing, cooking, music, or language lessons. Everyone has something to offer, and everyone has something to receive!

Our timebank is managed online through a system called hOurworld. Here, members post their offers and requests and record the exchanges they have with one another. If you don't use the Internet, another member can manage your online account for you!

Why timebanking?

Timebanks positively impact the health of individuals and communities by helping members access needed services and build connections with one another, thus increasing social cohesion. Strong social connections help make communities sustainable and resilient in the face of environmental, economic, and social challenges.

How do I join?

Becoming a member is easy and fun! Simply attend an orientation where you'll learn more about timebanking, meet new people, and get signed up. It is completely free. Check the events page for information on the next orientation.
